Up for sale is a 1981 BMW R80 G/S.
The one that started it all! If you see a modern ADV that can tackle rough and varied terrain (but likely only sees the road leading to the nearest coffee shop) then you can thank this bike for starting it.
When the G/S was released most people scratched their head and wondered just what the hell the thing was.
Those doubts are long gone.
This specific G/S is in near new condition.
It's absolutely spotless.
Every single switch and light works like new.
The clock still keeps good time! It was purchased by the current owner from a former BMW dealer here in Indianapolis.
This was the owner's bike, although technically it was owned by the shop as a demo bike.
If you test rode an ADV in the early 1980's and lived in Indianapolis chances are good it's this very bike you tested.
Because the bike was a demo for over 40 years, technically the current owner is first owner of the bike.
When it was purchased the bike 1,840 miles on the odometer.
It now has a little over 2,300.
ONLY 2,300 MILES ON A BIKE OVER 40 YEARS OLD!! The bike has a clean Indiana title.
It comes with the original owners manual and service manual in excellent condition.
It even comes with the original BMW battery charger! When purchased by the current owner in August of 2023 the fuel lines and tires were replaced and a full service was done.
The invoice for that work comes with the bike.
Since then it has been in a heated garage with a battery tender connected.
The bike is seriously in near perfect condition as are the additional parts and peripherals.
It's an absolute joy to look at and ride.
I know how I looked over 40 years ago and I have definitely not aged as well as this bike.
