About the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS):

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) leads Indiana's emergency planning and operations, first responder training and fire and building safety. The Indiana State Fire Marshal leads the Division of Fire and Building Safety (within IDHS), which oversees the enforcement of building codes and includes a fire investigations unit. The agency certifies and trains thousands of first responders and also hosts state-level exercises each year. IDHS also supports the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which leads response and coordination efforts for large-magnitude incidents.

Salary:

The starting hourly wage for this position is $25 per hour.

About The Job:

The mission of the Fire & Public Safety Academy Training System is changing lives though public safety education, training, and certification. This program provides instruction to the public service community, including fire certification courses and leadership training programs to public safety members who are looking to improve their skills and employment potential. This position can serve as a coordinator, coach, lead instructor, lead evaluator or proctor for Academy courses. He/she is primarily responsible for the accountability, discipline, safety, and enforcement of Academy rules and policies; the instruction of didactic materials; the evaluation of psychomotor skills; the movement of materials according to the training schedule; completion of administrative reports; and the necessary assistance to certification testing. Acting as a positive role model, Academy staff play an important role in ensuring academic excellence. This includes but is not limited to coordinating. coaching and teaching through positive mentoring; leading by example; providing counseling; enforcing standards; helping to build problem-solving abilities and developing leadership and teamwork skills.

A Day In The Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Serve as the Lead Instructor, Lead Evaluator or Proctor as required to meet the needs of the Fire & Public SafetyAcademy training programs;
    Assist in the evaluation of students to determine if they accomplish the objectives of the program andsuccessfully are prepared for certification testing, if applicable;
    Ensure students are under constant supervision at all times during instruction; ensure accountability andmaximum participation of students in activities and classes designated on the training schedule areaccomplished; participate in and monitor class activities;
    Participate in psychomotor skills with the students, as required, to enhance morale, and Academy synergy;
    Prepare and teach classes to students on curriculum provided by the Fire Academy of the respective programbeing instructed;
    Teach, demonstrate, supervise, and evaluate student performance;
    Work within the chain of command keep supervisor and academy staff informed of all important matters;
    Assist in transporting course materials between locations as needed in coordination with the Logistics ProgramManager.
    Ensure that Academy resources, props and facilities are properly maintained in accordance with establishedstandards.
    Attend and participate in required professional development training to maintain program proficiency and certifications.
  • The hourly rate for this position ranges from $20.00 to $30.00 per hour.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Minimum certification level at Instructor I; preferred certification at Instructor II/III, Instructor II or Instructor III,or EMS PI instructor certification
    Working knowledge of the Fire Academy & Public Safety Training System programs
    Considerable knowledge of the curriculums being instructed
    Basic knowledge of leadership techniques.
    Working knowledge of adult learning development, peer instruction and team dynamics.
    Working knowledge fire service style training and ability to enforce disciplinary, safety, and security measures.
    Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, tactfully and persuasively, with diverse individuals andgroups.
    Working knowledge of computers and the use of basic software programs such as Microsoft Office and able tonavigate through Acadis.
    Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques and make sound and binding decisions.
    Ability to organize and work independently on multiple tasks under pressure.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
