Family Advocate

Overview
The Family Advocate supports families as they adjust to life at the Center coordinating services and activities that support healthy living and foster positive parenting skills, enhancing the parent's role as the primary influence in the lives of their children. The Advocate also develops and provides a variety of age-appropriate recreational activities. The Family Advocate focuses upon connecting the parent with a variety of family and child focused internal and external resources that support the overall plan to develop financial stability and obtain permanent housing.
Responsibilities
Complete and intake/assessment on families seeking the services of the Center
Develop individualized action plans with steps designed to enhance family relationships and wellbeing
Provide support to families by offering:
Parenting groups or individual sessions
Family groups or sessions
Groups or individual sessions for youth at risk
Group or individual training in the areas of financial literacy, family health issues, life skills, etc.
Advocacy with school officials, health care providers, FSSA representatives, day care personnel, and other service providers as requested
Resources for child care, age-appropriate recreational activities
Referral to pastoral care program
Advocates for the family with outside programs and services including: educational institutions, Department of Children's Services, day care personnel, medical providers and other service providers as requested
Facilitates residents' adjustment to Center living by:
Functioning in partnership with shelter staff to enhance positive behavior and adjustment of children to the Center
Assessing families and children's needs, responding within Center guidelines and policies; maintains awareness of special circumstances surrounding mental health and domestic violence situations
May need to provide transportation for parents and children
Maintains records and keeps statistical reports as required by The Salvation Army and other systems in an efficient, accurate, timely manner
Other duties may be assigned to ensure the continuation of a safe, effective, efficient program and living environment
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma required, Associate's Degree or equivalent in Social Work, Family Relations, Human Development or Early Childhood Education strongly preferred
Background Checks: Position requires The Salvation Army background check and may, per funding requirements, also require a CPS background check and/or local law enforcement check and/or fingerprinting; findings may disqualify an individual for this position
Experience: At least two years' experience working with families in crisis required Certifications: CPR and first aid certification or the ability to become certified within 60 days of employment required
Skills/Abilities: Ability to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel and families; ability to accept and communicate with clients of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; basic computer skills Supervisory Responsibility: No Supervisory responsibility for this position.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
