Lead System Operator/Engineer

AES Indiana is seeking a System Operations Engineer supporting all aspects of electrical operations, with a primary focus on real time planning and system simulation. This position is responsible for developing programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with transmission operating reliability requirements. The engineer will complete analytical studies and assessments, interpret, and advising system operations personnel of system and network issues. Assist in developing training for operations personnel to ensure compliance with Mid Continent ISO (MISO), Reliability First (RF), NERC, FERC, and IURC along with providing regulatory audit support. PRIMARY
Responsibilities:
Develop plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and engineering studies associated with the operational short-term planning, design, postmortem incident analysis, and maintenance of the AES Indiana bulk transmission system. Utilize the Energy Management System (EMS) models (i.e. power flow, state estimator, and network topology), coordinate operating models and modeling data with MISO and neighboring utilities, maintain accurate records of analyses, data, and calculations. Provide engineering support to aid System Operators in responding to emergency situations. Evaluate AES Indiana operations and maintenance processes, practices, and procedures for compliance with regulatory requirements and develop mitigation plans to address deficiencies. Author and administer documentation and procedures for AES Indiana Operations according to area of responsibility. Support development, maintenance and implementation of AES Indiana Operations and corporate training program for assigned subject matter. Perform the necessary load-flow studies for operating the transmission system in a reliable and safe manner. Support AES Indiana operations by performing or coordinating contingency analyses for planned system outages. Coordinate with EMS personnel to construct and deploy scenarios in the Operations Training Simulator. Encourage and foster a high level of safety awareness within the organization. Represent AES Indiana on various working groups and committees within MISO, Reliability First, and North American Transmission Forum. May be required to work as a system operator on substitute basis. Perform other related duties as assigned. Assists in a training capacity for the direct operation of the bulk electric system. Assists the field switching operations performed by authorized personnel including Substation Inspectors/Switchmen, Substation Mechanics, Electricians, Linemen, Relay/SCADA Specialists, Troublemen and any other classification that may be required to operate equipment on the bulk electric system. During emergency operating conditions, System Operations Engineer works with and makes recommendations to department management to take the necessary actions to protect the transmission system integrity, prevent loss of life and minimize damage to transmission system components. Coordinates with System Operators and other System Operations management personnel regarding matters affecting the operation of the bulk electric system. Coordinates with the operation personnel of the interconnected utilities on a twenty-four-hour basis, exchanging information necessary to maintain good interconnected procedures. Assists in monitoring system conditions watching for abnormalities or other conditions that could affect the reliability of the bulk electric system; when such conditions are detected, the Transmission Operations Engineer may recommend to department management taking immediate action to remedy the situation. BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
o Accredited post-secondary education in an engineering or technology related field. o Must successfully pass pre-screening EEI exam System Operator/Power Dispatch (SOPD). o 5 or more years electric utility experience as lead operator in transmission operations. o Computer proficiency and effective verbal and written communication skills are requirements o Proficient in the English Language. PREFERRED SKILLS:
o Current NERC Certification. o Ability to work in a real-time operations environment on all shifts and as a team member. o Understanding of power substation equipment, power system electrical fundamentals, and the ability to interpret substation one-line diagrams and electrical schematics. o Possess a NERC Reliability Coordinator (RC) Certification.
Salary Range:
$100K -- $150K
Minimum Qualification
Systems Architecture & EngineeringEstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
